| What's Plainmoor Like? | |
| The ground is currently three sided at the moment as the Main Stand on one side of the pitch has been demolished in preparation for a new stand being built (see future developments below). Generally Plainmoor is basic and small, but has steadily improved over the years. Differing from other clubs, the Directors Box is situated behind one goal, in the Yelverton Properties Family Stand, rather than being to the side of the pitch. This is a neat, attractive, covered all seater stand. The other end is a small covered terrace, built in 2000 to replace a former open terrace. It also boosted the atmosphere within the ground. A new Police control box has been constructed to one side of this stand. At one side is a newish, small covered terrace, called the Thatchers Popular Cider Terrace. It looks slightly odd, having a television gantry perched on its roof. Outside the ground behind the home end and next to the Club shop is a programme shop which is worth a look. The ground is completed by a set of four old style looking floodlight pylons. | |
| Future Developments | |
|
The Club have commenced with the re-development of the Main Stand. This has now been demolished in preparation for the building of a new structure. It will have a capacity of 1,750 (all seated) and will cost in the region of £2m to build. It will include new dressing rooms, disabled facilities and a new press box. It will be named Bristow's Bench after a former Director of the Club. Plans of the new stand can be viewed on the Torquay United website. It is hoped that the new stand will be open before the end of this season. Photos of the stands demolition can be viewed on the Torquayfans.com forum. |

note that since this photo was taken the Main Stand
on the left has been demolished. |

| What Is It Like For Visiting Supporters? | |
| Around
1,100
away supporters can be accommodated in the Marsh
Toyota Away Stand, at one end of the ground. Additionally there is a small terraced
area that can be made available adjacent to the Main
Stand, but this area is open to the elements. The
Sparkworld Away terrace is
covered and the acoustics are good, meaning that
relatively few away supporters can still really make
some noise from this area.
Although the facilities are fairly basic, this was
compensated by some good banter between the away fans
and the stewards, plus the catering outlet was doing a
roaring trade in selling hot pasties. All in all a
good day out. Please note that due to the closure of the Main Stand, seats are generally not made available to away supporters, unless special arrangements are agreed with the club beforehand. |
|
| Where To Drink? | |
| The
supporters
club 'Boots & Laces' behind the main stand allows
away supporters in and I found it quite pleasant and
friendly. Simon Blogg recommends 'O'Connors' near the
ground. This Irish themed pub is around a five minute
walk from the home end on Marychurch Road and was
popular with away fans on my last visit. To find this
pub; then with the home end behind you, turn right and
continue in this direction until you reach Marychurch
Road. Turn left along this road keeping Somerfield on
your right and you will see the pub further down on
the left. Neil Le Milliere a visiting Exeter supporter adds; 'The George Inn on Babbacombe Road, was extremely welcoming, both before and after the game. The pub is around a ten minute walk away from the ground'. Located handily around the corner in Princes Street is the Hanburys Fish & Chip shop which has on occasion won national awards. Further on at the bottom of Princes Street you will find the Buccaneer Inn. Not only a good pub serving St Austell Ales, but outside the front of the pub you can also enjoy some great views along the coast. (There is also plenty of street parking available in this area). Also on Babbacombe Road is the Dog & Duck which welcomes away fans and also shows matches broadcast on SKY television. |

At the end of the M5
follow the A38 and then turn left onto the A380. On
reaching Kingskerwell, take the first exit at the
large roundabout (where is a McDonalds &
Sainsburys on one side) onto the A3022 towards
Torquay. After one mile turn left towards Babbacombe
(signposted Babbacombe (A379)). After 1 mile turn
left into Westhill Road for Warbro Road. Torquay
United is signposted on nearing the ground. Street
parking. |
|
| By Train | |
| The
ground is over two miles away from the main Torquay
railway station and so a taxi (around £5) may
well be in order. Neil Le
Milliere adds; 'Torre station (one stop before
Torquay station but not all trains stop there) is
closest to the ground. Walk up the hill opposite the
station and its around a 20-25 minute walk. If you have time on your hands then you can walk to the ground from Torquay station in around 40 minutes: On leaving the station turn left into Rathmore Road. Follow the road down crossing into Falkland Road. Proceed by way of Lucius Street and Tor Hill Road into Union Street. Take the St. Marychurch Road and climb the Hill towards Babbacombe then take the third turning on the right into Bronshill Road. The floodlights of Plainmoor will be visible after a few minutes on the left. Thanks to Myles Munsey for providing the directions. |
