Ted Bates was involved with the Club for a period of 66 years. Firstly as a player (1937-1953), Coach (1953-1955), Manager (1955-1973), Director and then Club President. He passed away in 2003.

The statue was first unveiled outside the Club in 2007. But following criticism from supporters, that it was a not a good likeness, it was taken down and replaced with the above statue in 2008.

The plinth reads:

TED BATES M.B.E
Mr SOUTHAMPTON
1918-2008

This statue has been erected by fans, friends and colleagues in recognition of Ted's 66 years of loyal service to our great club.
