We'd been for a look at the stadium
under construction on a previous visit to the old ground, so knew how
striking it is from the outside, but it is every bit as good as we
envisaged.
Parked for free as recommended on the
Denbigh Industrial Estate, less than 5 minutes easy walk away
Plenty of food and drink on offer in
Asda next door (which was surprisingly quiet for a Friday night), even
basic stuff like pie or pastie with chips and beans in the cafe
The stadium being raised on a plateau
above its own car-park really is very impressive as you approach, then
easy admission via the ticket-readers to the concourse from which the
view over the pitch is excellent.
Plenty of food bars and a couple of
alcohol-bars to choose from (we didn't try the latter so can't comment
on prices) - usual standard football food fare, pies/pasties/sausage
rolls/burgers and all at standard i.e.
overpriced football tariffs (but half Wembley prices!)
You can walk around the concourse for
around two-thirds of the stadium, until you reach the VIP area where a
friendly steward halts your progress. The away fans are housed in a
corner which is a bit of a shame as the area directly behind that goal
remains empty!
Struggled to find a programme-seller,
eventually a steward pointed us to them stood at the back of the
concourse opposite the aisles, but they could do with being a bit more
prominent.
The seats are JUST FANTASTIC,
cushioned, ample width and legroom - in fact the only potential
difficulty is that if the game were boring one might go to sleep.. We
were in the top-priced seats from which the view was superb.
Good atmosphere generated by the vocal
home fans, though we could do without the very small minority of idiots
who choose to sit in the posh seats on the side and bait the away fans
rather than behind the "Cowshed" goal with the real fans. The stewards
eventually dealt with these "apprentice hards" about an hour into the
game.
Dons ran out comfortable 3-0 winners
thanks to three unchallenged headers from dead balls, prompting the
strong contingent of away fans to chant for their manager's head.
Very quick egress from both stadium
and area afterwards made for a very enjoyable experience.
