Portman Road Ipswich Town
Championship League v Plymouth Argyle
Saturday,  November 5th 2005, 3pm

Matthew Appleton

1. Why you were looking forward to going to the ground (or not as the case may be):

I was looking forward to yet another away day with Argyle and visiting a new ground. So far this season I have only missed two away games and this is the one for the month of November. Me and my friends where staying up for the weekend (we found the hotel through the guide) and where looking forward to sampling the nightlife.

2. How easy was your journey/finding the ground/car parking:

The journey was pretty easy even though we came from Cornwall. We took 8:45 flight from Newquay to Stansted and the then got the train to Ipswich and was in the Hotel from by about 1ish. The ground you can't miss it right outside the station over the bridge.

3. What you did before the game pub/chippy.... home fans friendly?

Before the game we checked into the hotel and then took a walk down to Portman road. Took some photos outside the ground and also of the two statues Ramsey and Robson. We noticed a pub the Drum and Monkey but it was shut down ( I wish I owned the pub, it must have had a good trade on a match day). We walked down to the end of Portman road crossed over and you come to a retail park. We went into a pub/restaurant called Old Orleans and drank in there, where it was £2.30 for a Fosters which wasn't too bad.

4. What you thought on seeing the ground, first impressions of away end then other sides of the ground?

From the railway station the ground looks impressive with it's floodlights on the top of the stands The two ends look very modern and big. The ground deserves to be in the Premiership and blends old and new quite well. The away is in a old stand but the leg room is not to bad. The only problem you feel cut off right in the corner.

5. Comment on the game itself, atmosphere, stewards, pies, toilets etc..

The game was a typical Argyle away preformance and lacked the quality edge. If it stayed at 2-1 we could have had a chance but the penalty that Ipswich should have never been it was a complete dive. Argyle just need more quality up fornt to compete at this level and I think Ipswich won't make the play off's this season. The food was ok but I only drank beer my friends said the pies where fine but the pastry a little soft. The only down side the catering is in a little room in the corner of the stand and with a full away following it maybe a scrum.

6. Comment on getting away from the ground after the game:

Getting away was fine we walked out of the away end up portman road and into town for something to eat in about 15 minutes.

7. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out:

Apart from the result one of the better away days and a nice weekend. Would go back if it was not as far. The nightlife was good but that is another story.....
