What's The Ground Like?
On one side is the Floors 2 Go (Edgar Street) Stand. which is a strange looking covered, two tiered affair. The upper tier which is all seated and overhangs the lower terrace, which has a number of supporting pillars. Part of this stand which was built in 1974 is given to away supporters. Opposite is the Merton Meadow Stand, which is a raised, covered single tier, all seated stand. This stand which was opened in 1968, is used as a Family Stand. At the front of this are the team dugouts and a number of windows belonging to offices and Club Bar. On my last visit I wondered just how many of these get broken during the season, by balls that have gone astray. The home end, the Merton Meadow Terrace, is a classic looking, partly covered (to the rear) stand. This stand is semi circular in shape, going out around the back of the goal and has a number of supporting pillars. Opposite is the Blackfriars end, which is another partly covered terrace. This end is normally only used for larger games, where it can house both home and away fans. The ground also has some large, unusual looking floodlights.

The pitch is the largest in the top-five divisions and only the former Wembley had a larger playing area. There are plans to relocate in the future as the club are in negotiations about a move with the local council and developers. Fans will find it hard to leave Edgar Street as it has been the ground which has seen many a cup upset, most famously Newcastle who lost 2-1 here in 1972. It is intended to have Edgar Street redeveloped as part of a regeneration of the area, including the cattle market and Merton Meadow car park area. The football ground will be part of a new leisure, administration and retail centre in the city'.

Special thanks to Terry Goodwin for providing a lot of the information for this page.

What Is It Like For Visiting Supporters?
Away fans are housed on one side (towards the Blackfriars End) of the Floors 2 Go (Edgar Street) Stand at one side of the pitch. This stand has an upper tier of seating that overhangs a lower tier of terracing.

Going to Hereford is usually a happy and relaxed occasion, however unfortunately there have been some recent incidents around the ground, so exercise caution. On the whole though, away fans often mingle in the pubs with United fans before and after games and a visit to Edgar Street should be an enjoyable one. Cup days are also great occasions, as a live 'Prize' Bull is paraded around the ground and the Swede is blessed. This often gives the team the incentive to upset the odds. Facilities within the ground are basic, but there are a good range of refreshments available, including the delicious
'Football's Famous Chicken Balti Pie' 2).

Where To Drink?
There is a club bar at the ground, called Legends, which is open before and after the game. This small bar enjoys views across the ground. Scott Lyndon adds, 'We found that the Oxford Arms on the edge of the main car park friendly. It has a beer garden and sky sports'. As the stadium is in the city centre, there are many pubs and chip shops around the stadium within walking distances which serve good food and have a friendly atmosphere. Not too far from the ground (five minutes walk) is the Newmarket Tavern, which has a large screen and was quite comfortable. I have had mixed reports about this pub, so use your discretion. To find it; with the Club Shop behind you, turn right and walk up to the end of the stand and out of the car park. Turn left at the end of the ground, and at the end of this road turn right, towards the town centre. As you get to the ring road, the pub is on your right. If you arrive at the ground early, then by turning left instead and following the ring road to its end, you will come to the Victory Tavern. A selection of real ales and a bar which resembles half an old sailing ship, complete with cannons!

At the large roundabout, turn right onto the A49 Edgar Street and then right again into Blackfriars Street. The ground and car park entrance are down on the left.

From the South & London
Exit the M4 at junction 15 and take the A417 to Gloucester. Then follow the A49 to Ross-on-Wye and onto Hereford. At the roundabout, take the Grayfriars Bridge/Victoria Street road. At Steels Garage, keep left into Edgar Street. Take Blackfriars Street (right) immediately before the football stadium. Turn left for parking.

By Train
Hereford Station is under a ten minute walk away. Carl Brace provides directions to the ground; 'Come out of the station and turn left and down the road towards the Safeway supermarket. Cut through the Safeway car park (heading left) and follow the pedestrian walkway out of the store out onto Commercial Road. Go left down Commercial Road, where you will pass the Merton Hotel on your right and a Wetherspoons pub on your left. At the top of the road at the traffic lights, turn right (against the direction of the traffic) into Blueschool Street. Keep walking along here until you come to a set of lights and a multi storey car park opposite and to the right (this is Widemarsh Street). Cross over and bear slightly right and cut up a walkway between the car park and Garrick House (council offices) where you come into a car park (if you head left you will find the Newmarket Pub) head right and walk out the car park. Turn left and you cant miss the ground, it's on your right'.

Whilst Fabrinelli provides these alternative directions which avoid the town centre; '
Follow the road out from the station until you get to Rockfield DIY.  At this crossroads take a left turn so as that you are looking up a big hill. Walk for about 2 minutes and take the first left turning (before the hill). Walk to the end of this road (Barrs Court Road) where you will see a mini roundabout.  Take the left turning and walk across the bridge footpath. Stay on this winding pavement for about 2 or 3 minutes until you see two car sales rooms on the other side of the road-there is a gap between the two garages and this leads into the Merton Meadow car park (footy ground car park) where you will see the ground'.

Feedback
If anything is incorrect or you have something to add, please e-mail me and I'll update the guide.

* Hereford United moved into Edgar Street when the Club was formed in 1924. However the ground was already being used prior to that date by Hereford City Football Club.
