Craven Cottage
v Portsmouth, Premier League

Sunday, April 1st 2006, 3pm
By James Audley

1. Why you were looking forward to going to the ground (or not as the case may be):

Because I came to this same game last season (Pompey lost 3-1) and I really enjoyed the day despite the result. I liked the ground and all of it facilities, and overall had a good day out, plus with Pompeys recent form made the match very important and a must-go and see.

2. How easy was your journey/finding the ground/car parking?

The journey was easy by train, and then no hassle once on the tube. Once off the tube at about 1.00pm and out of the station, the ground was very easy to find as we just found the river Thames, crossed the bridge and followed the Thames and the other fans heading the game.

3. What you did before the game pub/chippy.... home fans friendly?

We actually bought a football and played a game of football in park behind the away end, for about an hour before walking up to the ground and arriving there about 20 minutes before kick-off. Saw some Fulham fans on the way, they seemed friendly and did not cause any trouble to us at all.

4. What you thought on seeing the ground, first impressions of away end then other sides of the ground?

My first impressions of the ground was that it very similar to Fratton Park just the only difference was the away end has a roof! and only had supporting pillars in the way of fans who were more than 3 quarters up. The away end had lots of legroom and was actually a lot bigger than I had previously throught. The rest of the ground was a mix of old and new as the two side stands were old and very traditional, whereas the opposite end stand (Hammersmith End) was exactly the same as the away end.

5. Comment on the game itself, atmosphere, stewards, pies, toilets etc..

The game was amazing as Pompey recorded another win and played very well and overall the game was a good one, one of the best I had seen all season (Either at the ground or on TV). The atmosphere was just amazing as the Pompey fans really made more noise. The stewards were good and allowed the away fans to stand for the whole game, and if anyone did out of hand they were on it in a flash. The food was good, once you managed to fight your to the front of the queue! There was plenty of toilets and they were at a good standard.

6. Comment on getting away from the ground after the game:

Was very easy once we actually managed to get out of the ground after the post-match party us Pompey fans had and the fact were was only 1 exit for the whole stand which made it a tiny bit difficult. But once out of the ground it was easy to get on a train at Putney Tube Station.

7. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out:

It was amazing from start to finish, the train trips were a laugh as we was singing pompey songs in good voice. The match itself was just first class as we recorded another win on the great escape 2005/2006 series! And finally I would recommend Craven Cottage as a good day out for a football fan.
