It
was my first visit to Goodison and a game
I was particularly looking forward to as I
arranged a weekend in Liverpool with my
Everton supporting friends Anton and Joe
(9). His partner and my family went on a
retail therapy day to Liverpool 1 shopping
centre leaving us to have a full day
indulgence of footy.
After
several pints of bitter at the Liver pub
on Friday night I went to see young Joe
Owen in his under 9's footy match…its no
wonder this city develops so many
professional footballers as the set up for
youth football is excellent, 7 a side
based on skill and poise as opposed to
strength and endeavour.
After
watching Joe play and eating a bacon and
sausage bap it was off to the
Weatherspoons Pub the Thomas Frost as
recommended by this web site. Here I met
my dad and my mate and his son who had
travelled up by train. All of us wearing
Wolves colours the pub was an excellent
mixture of home and away fans, all in good
voice and friendly. The pub is a slow 10
minute walk to Goodison Park.
First
impressions of the ground were that this
was a fairly dated yet traditional stadium
in need of cosmetic improvement or
demolition. Inside however I found the
atmosphere fantastic and whilst the view
was not the best ever (sitting on front
row with excellent view of players ankles
and the sloping of the pitch surface) it
was at least unobstructed. Tea and coffee
was as standard although it did get fairly
squashed in concourse. Friends sitting
towards back of stand did complain about
obstructed views so I would advise trying
to get seats in first 10 to 15 rows!
Kevin
Doyle scored in the 87th minute raising
the prospect of our first away victory
only for us to concede a last minute
equaliser.
After
the game I returned to the Thomas Frost
pub and entered many conversations with
Everton fans who I found friendly,
hospitable and knowledgeable. My father,
friend and his son then got a taxi back to
train station (waved down right outside
pub under £10) whilst we went to
join family at Liverpool 1 (Everton have a
shop there called Everton 2). Day was
slightly let down when I found out the
extent of my families retail therapy.
Excellent day,
traditional and real stadium,
hospitable and real football
supporters and will definitely return!
