The plinth below the statue reads; 'In Memory Of Steve Bloomer. 1874-1938. This tablet was erected by many of his friends and admirers as an appreciation of his services to Derby County Football Club and his country. Also as a tribute to one of the greatest players that the game has produced. The statue was unveiled in January 2009.

Steve Bloomer made 473 appearances in 18 years scoring 291 times. He was also capped 23 times for England scoring 28 goals. It doesn't seem a lot of caps for such a prolific player, but at that time this was a record number of caps (the national team didn't play as often as they do now) and when you consider that the 1st World War also interrupted his career, it was a remarkable achievement.
